Consumerism

Saw this link on Jonny Bakers blog- go and have a look at it.

It is very sobering, and quite shocking. I’d be interested to know what you think.

Jaw-dropping stuff
Brilliant way of making reality more real
Humans, eh? Crazy, the lot of us

Some really interesting pieces sonia, but scary as hell……
I now feel really guilty at the number of cans/bottles of drink we have - mind you its worse because there is no recycling here….
x

It really is thought provoking. I think what is important is that we all think about what we do and play some small part to improve things. Charlie, hard to imagine a country where recycling doesn’t happen- even though not everyone does it here, you at least see it in a lot of places. It must be hard to know what you can do in that situation- re use things yourself I guess.

just had a very quick glance, it is a sobering thought to realise how we’ve ploughed through the worlds resources, it may prove true that ‘the poor will inherit the earth’, in that our high energy, high need, lifestyle leaves us vulnerable. That is if we haven’t contaminated the earth so badly it becomes unable to sustain any life at all.

It is quite shocking when you look at the visual image and then the figures.

I was impressed from an artistic point of view by the works, though. Did the set some of those up or were they just computer generated, do you think?

Gosh that is scary. We are lucky to have quite good recycling collections here - but recently I have been noticing how much stuff (esp plastic)still goes in the bin. I was really challenged by a piece I read about food waste the other week - reckoning the average family throws away around £30 worth of food a month ( I think it was a month - I’m not good with figures!!) It was a lot, anyhow. This creates a big problem as food waste when not composted creates lots of methane. So since then I have been trying out their suggestion of planning my weekly menu before shopping, and I have to say I have bought a lot less food and thrown away a lot less too. I’m also trying to plan where I shop - to buy meat from the butcher so it doesn’t come with plastic try attached, etc etc - but that is harder. This link has encouraged me to keep trying…

and yes, Carole, I think the images are at least assembled on a computer…probably repeats of one smaller image cleverly pasted together. Beats me how he found the patience to calculate the numbers of objects!!!
